As I wrote recently in my piece Mangia Cake, when I was a kid growing up, I knew Italian moms put a lot into the lunches they made for us. I was pretty impressed by the time and effort spent just so we could have something good and filling to eat at school.
Then I saw Bento Box lunches… and my jaw dropped.
I couldn’t believe my eyes!
Japanese moms made these things for their kids…. To take to school with them… And eat?
Are you kidding me??
I’m glad we didn’t have any Japanese kids at St Mary’s when I was in grade school. We couldn’t have handled it.
And for the poor mangia cake kids… their heads would have exploded.
The Lady Bug Sandwich bento (below) is from WordPress’s own SusanYuen.
You HAVE to check out her blog, Hawai’i’s Bento Box Cookbook, Bentos and More for Kids, to appreciate the artistry and imagination that goes into her Bento creations. Very well done, Susan. I am SO impressed; you’ve no idea!
Sorry, Ma. Sorry. Nonna. I hate to say it, but they got you beat on this one!
I just couldn’t eat that. It would be like eating my friends.
Pigeon Heart: I never looked at it that way, really. Hmmm… Sitting down to lunch, opening your bento box to reveal Hello Kitty. Cute. Adorable. But then you’re hungry… and you find yourself saying, “BRAINS!! BRAINSSS!!”… and before you know it, you’re the lunch room zombie noshing on its former childhood friend’s head. I can see how that might be disturbing. 🙂
Can you please tell me how to make a panda-themed bento? I like the panda theme bento
My guess is that you find the appropriate rice molds and then decorate the ‘black’ accordingly. While I admire bento, I myself have never made it. I suggest checkout out Susan Yuen’s blog. http://susanyuen.wordpress.com/ I am sure it has all kinds of helpful tips on how to create fun, interesting and tasty bento. Let me know how it goes, ok? 🙂
There are absolutely AMAZING!! I just read an article on BBC News about bento box and I was just amazing and so cute so I decided to do abit of research and share the beautiful lunches on my own blog. They are just so artistic and creative! These mums have put alot of time and effort into these!
All the time, effort and creativity that goes into creating and making these bento box lunches. The moms have earned my admiration, respect and envy! 🙂

I feel like such a slacker as a mom!
I know!! Compared to Japanese bento boxes, my lunches seemed like culinary child abuse! LOL

Oh my goodness… can it be a bento that doesn’t include a … thermal?? Yeah, I’m kind of getting over the thermal thing right now.
Reblogged this on Backpacks and Babygrows and commented:
