Those who know me extremely well also know that I have this thing for log homes.

And when I say ‘log homes’ I don’t mean cosy little one-room log shacks.

I’m thinking of a big log house.

lodge-10

Actually, more along the lines of a log lodge.

lodge-09

A log chalet is basically what I’m thinking.

Ever see those honkin’ big homes that look not unlike exclusive ski lodges.

That’s what I’m talking about.

Giant A-frame ceilings over the living room and kitchen.

Walk-in fireplaces.

Kitchens that could churn out enough food to feel a lumber jack crew.

That sort of thing.

Not sure I would be so wild about staying there in the summer…

But I could easily spend the fall, spring and especially winter in one.

My idea of a glorious time.

We Need to Talk about the Onesie…

one-direction-onesies(One Direction… straight to fashion hell)

…because it’s ugly… It’s awful… it’s unflattering… and it just looks really ridiculous and goofy.

In short: Onesies should never be worn outdoors. And yet, that is exactly what many people ended up doing in 2013. What happened to the world?

Since when did it become acceptable to wear baby pajamas in public? You’re adults! You should not be wearing long-legged, baggy animal costumes with fleece lining and zippers reaching from the neck to somewhere far below what is morally justifiable. You really shouldn’t.

To make things even worse, celebrities are contributing substantially to this trend deplorably universal frying of all stylish brain cells. Justin Bieber, One Direction, Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Brad Pitt,…Everyone wears them outdoors. In public. For everyone to see. As if it is the most normal thing on the planet.

Italian food. I still have to meet the first person who doesn’t like it. And to be honest, I don’t think I will ever meet him or her, because it is simply physically and emotionally impossible not to be swept away by the real flavours of Italian cuisine.

Just so you know, when I’m talking about Italian food, I do not mean spaghetti Bolognese or spaghetti and meatballs.

the horror

Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with these two dishes- they are actually pretty yummy- but they are just not really Italian.

No, when I’m talking about Italian food, I’m talking about food that kicks you in the balls. Food that is so full of flavour, freshness and depth, it will take your breath away. Real, honest Italian food does not look dainty or pretty. It is gutsy and robust.

The bigger the plate, the better.

Now that is a…

Someone somewhere approved this name…

On a corporate level…

Advertising campaigns were built around this name…

Who on earth approved it?

worst-food-product-names-18

It’s in English. You’d think someone could have run it by an English speaking person?

worst-food-product-names-22

Not just the “Hello. Good day. How do you do? Monday, Tuesday, Thursday” kind of English speaker.

Roasted Garlic Mushrooms

Roasted Garlic Mushrooms

From Gina’s Favourites!

The name says it all! Try it. Love it!

Ingredients:

16 even-sized open cup mushrooms, stalks cut level
3 tbsp corn or vegetable oil
75g unsalted butter, softened
3 cloves garlic, chopped very finely
2 tbsp fresh thyme, chopped
1½ tbsp lemon juice
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
50g fresh breadcrumbs

ROASTED GARLIC MUSHROOMS

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/gas mark 6. Lightly fry the mushrooms, cap-side down, in hot oil for 20 seconds.

Arrange the mushrooms in a shallow roasting tin with the stalks facing upwards.

Mix together the butter, garlic, thyme, lemon juice and seasoning. Spoon a little garlic butter onto each mushroom, then lightly press the breadcrumbs on top.

Either refrigerate for later use, or cook immediately in the oven for 10 minutes.

It’s not only the old fir trees that make this photo so awe-inspiring. It’s the clouds across the Dolomite mountains in the background. But most importantly, it is the fact that the image is reflected in waters of Lake Carezza (lit. ‘caress’) with circular ripples moving outwards.

“Lake Carezza is a pearl of the Dolomites. Nestled between an ancient forest of grand firs and Latemar mountain, it’s a place of legends and beauty—a nymph lives under its emerald waters. I threw a little stone in the water to add a little mystery to the scene.” (Antonio Chiumenti)

(This photo and caption were submitted to the 2013 National Geographic Photo Contest.)
